Five years in the making this book uncovers the work of a remarkable artist. MORRIS GOLDSTEIN emerged from London’s East End to become a pivotal member of the WHITECHAPEL BOYS - an avant-garde group of exceptional artists, writers and poets, who hailed from central and eastern Europe. The group included David Bomberg, Mark Gertler, Isaac Rosenberg, Jacob Kramer, Joseph Leftwich and Stephen Winston.

With the Whitechapel Library as their meeting place, they sowed the seeds of British Modernism.

Many of the group found recognition, but Morris Goldstein’s story was lost to history.

For the first time, this book brings together over 100 surviving works of Morris Goldstein together with sketches, archival material and contributions from award-winning historians and curators.

From the author:

“It’s been a five year journey to uncover my father’s remarkable story and bring it to life.

I now reflect on my childhood with fresh eyes. I remember the days when my father introduced me to the Great Masters at London's leading art galleries. By the time I was 8, he had an expectation that I could identify a Rubens from a Holbein.

It was only long after his death that I discovered he was a Slade graduate and had been at the forefront of British Modernism as a pivotal member of the Whitechapel Boys”
